Earth & Water Art Exhibition - Opening Garden State Art Weekend

Earth & Water Art Exhibition - Opening Garden State Art Weekend
Free Event
Opening Reception: Thursday, April 24 | 5-8PM
Earth & Water is a solo exhibition of work by Lauren Rosenthal McManus. McManus’s drawings, installations, and community-based projects combine geospatial data and site-specific pigments to emphasize the innate beauty and universal importance of freshwater systems. These works spark a deepened sense of place through the reconsideration of community boundaries and notions of home.
During Garden State Art Weekend, visitors of all ages are invited to participate in creating a collaborative map of the Rahway River Watershed, where 1978 Maplewood Arts Center is located. Join us in painting an ecological patchwork of earth colors gathered in the landscapes through which these waters flow—a reminder of our collective responsibility to care for one another and for the river on which we depend.
Artist Bio:
Lauren Rosenthal McManus’s watershed maps reframe the boundaries that define community. Her work is held in several institutional collections, including the Nurture Nature Center, the Charlotte Museum of History, and the Bank of America Collection. McManus has received grants from Together North Jersey's Vibrant Places Program and Delaware Wild and Scenic to support flood resilience and watershed education projects, and has been awarded residencies from the University of Colorado and McColl Center. She holds a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis and an MFA from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where she was an urban livability fellow. She currently lives and works in Lambertville, New Jersey, where she has served on both the Environmental Commission and Resilience Team.
